Quant Interviews: Resources to Refresh Math
Initially, my plan was to write about the communities and online platforms that provide invaluable support and insights for those preparing for quantitative role interviews. However, I decided to pivot and focus on the resources I utilized to strengthen my mathematical foundation instead after receiving the online assessment (with optional maths section) for a software engineering position at Goldman Sachs.
I recognized this as a golden opportunity to not only showcase my technical skills but also to refresh my mathematical knowledge, a crucial asset for potential quant interviews down the line. Over the past 1-2 weeks, I dedicated focused efforts to fortify my understanding of key mathematical domains. As such, this article will illuminate the best resources for mastering Linear Algebra, Probability, Stochastic Calculus, and Statistics – the fundamental pillars that underpin success in quant role interviews.
Linear Algebra
Linear Algebra serves as the backbone for many quantitative roles. Prof. Gilbert Strang's 18.06 MIT Open Courseware is an excellent resource for mastering the fundamentals of Linear Algebra. With clear explanations and comprehensive lectures, this resource provides an in-depth understanding of matrices, vector spaces, and eigenvalues, crucial for quantitative analysis.
Probability

Fortunate to stumble upon my class notes for a basic revision, I found additional support in the form of valuable resources that significantly enhanced my understanding of probability. Specifically, "Applied Combinatorics" (https://www.appliedcombinatorics.org/book/app-comb.html) and N. Loehr's "Combinatorics" served as illuminating guides, offering a solid introduction to the foundational principles of probability. These resources provided clear explanations and practical applications, making complex concepts more accessible. To reinforce my comprehension, I engaged in hands-on practice using "Combinatorics: A Problem-Based Approach" by P. Mladenovic. This book not only deepened my understanding but also facilitated practical application through problem sets accompanied by detailed solutions. The seamless integration of these resources formed a comprehensive approach, ensuring a robust and practical grasp of probability theory, a key asset in preparing for quantitative role interviews.
Stochastic Calculus
Delving into the intricacies of stochastic calculus, I highly recommend Steven Shreve's "Stochastic Calculus & Finance Vol 2 (2010)" as a comprehensive and indispensable guide for quantitative finance aspirants. Stochastic calculus, a critical component in modeling financial markets and understanding derivatives, is demystified through Shreve's meticulous exploration of essential theories and methodologies. His book not only provides a deep dive into the subject matter but also offers clarity of explanation and a wealth of examples, making it an invaluable resource. Whether you're a seasoned professional or a newcomer to the field, Shreve's work serves as an authoritative reference, enhancing proficiency in this complex yet essential area of quantitative finance.
Statistics

Statistical knowledge is a cornerstone in quantitative roles, and for self-learners seeking a practical introduction to statistical modeling, "An Introduction to Statistical Learning" is an excellent starting point. This resource not only provides a comprehensive overview but also offers practical insights into applying statistical methods to real-world financial data. However, for individuals looking to delve deeper and possessing the requisite mathematical background and Python skills, "Elements of Statistical Learning" by the same publisher is recommended. Renowned for its mathematical rigor, this advanced text offers a more in-depth exploration of statistical learning concepts. Tailored to those who are ready to navigate complex mathematical frameworks, it serves as an invaluable resource for honing expertise in statistical learning within the quantitative finance domain.
Beyond just technical proficiency, these materials offer a strategic lens for navigating quantitative interviews and real-world problem-solving scenarios. As you embark on your own quest for mastery, I extend my best wishes. May this curated collection of resources be a valuable companion, enhancing your capabilities and setting the stage for success in your endeavors. Good luck!
